Performance Opportunities
RECITALS:
Recitals give students the opportunity to apply and demonstrate their skills and talents for their family, friends and other students.
There are a number of Reed Music Studios recitals scheduled each year in which all students will be encouraged to participate - students are not required to perform. Recitals are usually held in the lower level auditorium at the La Crosse Public Library. The library is located on Main Street in downtown La Crosse and the auditorium has plenty of comfortable seating and a Steinway grand piano.
HONORS RECITAL:
For students who are looking for an additional goal and wish to perform in a very professional setting, there is the annual Reed Music Studios Honors Recital held in the fall each year. All students of the studio will have the opportunity to audition for this performance. All students will receive encouraging feedback and written comments about their musicianship after they audition. Students who are selected to perform will participate in the Honors Recital which takes place on stage in Annett Recital Hall, in the Center for the Arts, at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.
FESTIVALS AND COMPETITIONS:
Students who are showing steady progress and are highly motivated may have the opportunity to participate in local WSMA solo/ensemble festivals and/or the WMTA auditions in the spring of each year.
WSMA (Wisconsin School Music Association) solo and ensemble festivals are hosted by area school music programs. Any student who is a member of the school choir, band or orchestra, and is in 6th grade or older is eligible to participate in the festival that usually takes place in February. Students perform for a qualified adjudicator, are awarded a rating and receive written and/or verbal comments about their performance.
WMTA (Wisconsin Music Teachers Association) holds district auditions once a year, usually in March. Students as young as first grade may participate by peforming two or three memorized solos and completing a short musicianship test. Students that are in fourth grade or older, are eligible to enter the "state track" category of the auditions. Based on their performance points earned and the score on their theory (musicianship) exam, they may qualify to participate in the state level WMTA Badger auditions which are held in May each year. All WMTA participants regardless of which category entered earn points which accumulate from year to year toward WMTA awards. Students may participate in this event if their instructor is a member of WMTA.
There are entry fees associated with participation in the honors recital and the WMTA auditions. Some schools cover the fees for solo and ensemble participants.
MALL PERFORMANCES:
During the holiday season, Reed Music Studios reserves at least two dates for students to perform holiday music at Valley View Mall. Students that are able to provide at least fifteen minutes of well prepared music in one sitting, will be selected and asked to perform by their instructor. Performing at the mall is a great chance for intermediate to early advanced level students to gain additional performance experience in a setting that is a bit different than a traditional recital. This prepares students who may someday want to perform for private parties and gatherings or those who want to provide prelude and postlude music for church services.
