Find an Instrument

FOR PIANO STUDENTS:

For all piano students, a traditional, acoustic piano is the ideal instrument to have. But, for some families, a digital (electronic) piano might be a better option. A digital piano (we recommend the "Clavinova", made by Yamaha) is less expensive, does not take as much space in your home, is not as heavy, can be played using headphones and never needs to be tuned. The sound and keyboard touch is very similar to a real piano so it is suitable for most beginners.

A beginning piano student who has been practicing on a digital instrument and is steadily progressing toward intermediate repertoire, should consider upgrading to an acoustic piano for long-term lessons. It is essential for a serious piano student to practice on a real piano in order to develop advanced technical musicianship skills.

FOR STRINGS STUDENTS:

Violins, violas and cellos can be purchased or rented at local music stores. Young students will need assistance in finding the correct size of instrument for their age/size. The sales staff at a music store or your instructor can help you in choosing the appropriate instrument that you will need.

FOR GUITAR STUDENTS:

Brand new acoustic guitars with a case can be purchased for under $300. Because the purchase price of these instruments is reasonable and is much less than buying a piano for instance, guitars are usually not instruments that can be rented. Your instructor may be able to offer additional guidance and advice in purchasing a suitable guitar in the correct size for the student.

FOR FLUTE STUDENTS:

For students who will take flute lessons the local music store have flutes to rent or purchase.

LOCAL MUSIC STORES:

The La Crosse area is fortunate to have three music stores that sell and/or rent musical instruments.

Leithold Music sells new Yamaha and various brands of used pianos, Yamaha Clavinovas, stringed instruments and guitars in addition to having reasonable rental programs for the Clavinovas and stringed instruments.

SSE Music has a wide selection of acoustic pianos, digital pianos and keyboards, band and string instruments, and guitars. Band and orchestral instruments and basic digital pianos are available for rent at competitive rates. SSE Music also has comprehensive repair facilities for band and string instruments, guitars and electonics.

Dave's Guitar Shop has a very large selection of guitars and accessories.
