Dr. David Phipps
Violin and Viola Instructor


Dr. David Phipps moved to the midwest from Washington State and received his Masters Degree and his D.M.A from the University of Iowa.

David Phipps has lived in the La Crosse area for over eighteen years. During that time he has held positions of Concertmaster and Assistant Concertmaster of the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Conductor for the La Crosse Youth Symphony. In addition to performing in the L.S.O., David has given some of the symphony's pre-concert lectures and serves on their artistic committee. 

Dr. Phipps has performed as a soloist in area recitals and also has been a featured soloist with the La Crosse Symphony, the Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra and with the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse Symphony.  When the UWL Orchestra toured Europe in May of 2000, he performed as a soloist and conductor in concerts in Brno, Krakow, Prague, and Budapest. In 2006, he again traveled with the UWL Orchestra as conductor and soloist in France and Germany. In addition to his performances with the La Crosse Symphony, he has performed in Viterbo’s Bright Star concert series.

He has had over thirty years experience as a private violin and viola teacher and enjoys working with students in all ranges of age and experience. He has served on the faculties of Viterbo University, The University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, Luther College in Decorah Iowa and Winona State University in Minnesota. He has also taught in the public schools in Decorah, Iowa.

Dr. Phipps has served as an adjudicator for W.S.M.A. festivals, has been a clinician for many grade schools and high schools in the La Crosse area and was an instructor at Hamilton Elementary School’s Community Partnership for Strings in 2001-2002.  In addition  to performing as a violinist and violist, he has had a number of  his own compositions performed in the area, most recently “Holiday Concertino” written for the La Crosse Symphony and performed at the December 2004 Holiday Concert. In the 2007-2008 La Crosse Symphony Season he will be a featured soloist with the orchestra.

He lives in La Crosse with a his very mellow cat, “Mr.Kreisler”.
